Preparing for a New Sibling
Congratulations! We are so excited that you are welcoming a new baby into your home! Children benefit so much from growing up with a sibling. We have put together some information to help you prepare your child for coping with the many changes that come with having a new sibling:
The Toileting Process
Toileting is a natural part of development. Children exhibit signs of readiness that, if identified in time, can help the whole process go more smoothly
Dealing with Toddler Behavior
The crisis of self-affirmation, begins around 18 months and lasts until 2 ½ to 3 years. It represents a period of transition from infancy to childhood, and is often recognized in the child who begins to say “no.” Children at this age are growing and changing rapidly, gaining new motor and language abilities daily
A Montessori Approach to Discipline
Montessori children tend to be independent with a strong sense of order. It is important to keep this in mind in our approach to discipline.
Some Thoughts on Sharing
In our approach we teach children to take turns. There is only one of each item in the Montessori environment. Thus, children learn valuable skills such as waiting patiently to use something or finding an alternate activity when the material they would like to use is not available. When a child chooses an activity, he is free to use it for as long as he likes, until he is finished.
Communicating with Children
Children need to learn how to make the right choices themselves, free from external control (the adult). Therefore, the adults model appropriate behavior and allow children the freedom to learn from their own mistakes.
Sensitive Periods
